  • Finding the right person to work for your company

    Recruiting the best person for a role in your company can be a minefield as advertising, interviewing and employing a new employee can be a costly business which you do not want to repeat on a regular basis which is why many companies turn to a recruitment agency to fill their vacancies. Although the recruitment agency will charge a fee for their services it does take away a lot of the stress of finding people who are suitable qualified and experienced.

    It is important to be clear with the agency the skills that are required for the role you wish to fill at the outset so that they can use this when they are looking through their database of clients who are on their books. For instance, if it is essential that the potential employee has certain qualifications then this should be communicated to the recruitment agency.

    Flexible working hours and remote working have become the norm recently and any forward thinking company will need to embrace this way of working. Being able to offer these options will often result in more applications as employees seek to get a better work life balance with reduced commuting time. The quality of work produced by people given the opportunity to work in this way is often superior as employees’ welfare is often improved.

  • Changing your career – how to get ready

    Getting ready for a change in career can be very daunting. It may be that you have not taken the decision to leave your current job but that your circumstances have changed which has meant you need to or you have been let go by your previous employer. Before going out and looking for work it is important that you have everything ready. This means your CV should be up to date with your latest experience and qualifications. Be sure to think carefully when drafting your CV as this is the first impression that an employer will have of you.

    If you are struggling to know what to put in your CV or how to lay it out then you may instead want to look online for a template. If you do use a template, be sure to take out any sample text as this does not look good if accident left in when you submit your CV. Do your research on the company that you are applying to as it always looks good if you know a bit about them and their background too. If you do get invited for an interview then be sure to dress to impress. It is usually most appropriate to wear formal clothing to an interview and it is better to be over dressed than under dressed.

  • New job for the new year!

    The new year is literally only a couple of months away and now may be the time to start thinking seriously about your career. It could be that you decide you want to go back in to education next year and retrain ti do another job or perhaps you already have the qualifications you need and just want to work for a different firm.

    Some people find there comes a time when they don’t want to work for someone else anymore, instead they want to be their own boss. Lots of people found throughout lockdown that they actually enjoyed working from home and feel that they could really make a go of it. Working from home is not always easy and yes there are definitely perks to it but there are also downsides. You need to ensure that you have a lot of will power and disciple to ensure that you do not get distracted with things going on around you.

    If you are going to be working from another company then now is the time to start putting in those job applications. Not many firms will recruit in the first few weeks back in January but they often start to assess their own business and make plans to go forward.

  • Taking advantage of course in your area

    If you are considering changing your job or are currently looking for employment then you need to make sure you give yourself the best possible chance of landing the position. There are often a variety of courses that you can do within the industry you are looking to get in to. Some may be recognised qualifications other courses may just be to enable you to get experience or learn a new skill.

    Money if often one of the reason people do not go back in to education or training. Often many of these smaller courses can be done part time in an evening. This allows you to continue working and bringing in a wage at the same time.

    Some colleges are offering a number of courses for free to those people who are over the age of 19 and have no degree. This is to help build up a skilled workforce and enable people to apply for better more skilled jobs. There may be other criteria, such as living in the same area as the college, that may need to be met so always consult with the relevant education setting to find out that they can offer to you.

  • Will my job affect my mortgage choices?

    Many people still feel that owning their own home is something to aim for but if you are looking to buy your own home then you may be surprised to hear that your job can have a big impact on your chances of being accepted for a mortgage. This is particularly so if you are self-employed for example as in most cases you will be required to provide three years of accounts showing that you have a good turn over before you will even be considered for a mortgage. If you have not kept accurate accounts then this may prove problematic, and you could find yourself in a situation where few mortgage providers will be willing to offer you the money you need.

    Another issue for those hoping to secure a mortgage is if you are on a low or zero hour contract as you may struggle to get the mortgage deal you are looking for. As you have no guarantee of work, mortgage providers tend to refuse to risk lending people in this position the funds they require. So, if you want to get a mortgage what is the best advice concerning employment?

    You may have to consider finding alternative employment, ideally a full-time permanent position at least in the short term. You will usually need to provide at least the last three months of payslips and possibly a contract of employment but is you can secure a mortgage then this will be worthwhile.
