    The employment regulations are quite strict in the UK and for good reason. The employment laws are set out to ensure that all workers and employers are treated fairly and that the places and conditions in which they work are safe and clean.

    For foreign workers, there are some additional laws that need to be consider when employing someone within a UK based company. The EEA nationals freedom of movement act states that all people within the EU have the right to work, live and study in any of the Member States of the

    European Union with the same rights as the local population. They must not be discriminated against due to their nationality. If you are a foreign worker and feel that you are being discriminated against then there are organisation who can advise you of the steps you need to take.

    If you have been in a job for a while and have not recently had a pay rise then now may be the time to ask. Before asking for a pay rise, you should consider what you have brought to the company to make it viable for them to give you a pay rise.

    Companies need to know that you are making them money in order to be able to pay you more. The best way of approaching the subject is to make a note of things that you have done, for example, won new contracts, sold additional products and services or cut down on their overheads. In certain jobs where you are not directly involved in sales or accounts this can be difficult, but if you have put in extra hours on a regular basis or have improved a process that has in turn saved them money or time then you could also mention this.

I met with the Job Centre and they offered me courses to go on to allow me to learn everything I needed to, to set up my own business.
