  • Is there any age limit for starting a new career?

The answer is no, not really. Any one can change their career and you must try not to think that you are too old. If you want to be a doctor for example, then you will have to bear in mind how much studying and training you will have to do, so if you are already in your 50’s you may wonder if it is worth the time as you may not have much time once you have graduated to actually follow your career path.

One of the main things that holds people back from studying for a new career when they are older is money. Unless you can find a job which offers training whilst you work, you may have to go in to full time studies and lose out on an income for a number of years. This can put a lot of financial strain on an individual.

IF you are able to, you may consider doing an evening course at college or an Open University course so you can still keep working full time. This is very hard work and you will have to be extremely disciplined in order to manage both effectively.

  • Finding work in a hurry

There may be time when you find yourself out of work for a while and are in quick need of an income. You could sign up to a temping recruitment agency who will often find you work for the next day or so but you have to be flexible, ideally need your own transport and be willing to change jobs on a daily basis if needed. You may also find that they take a large cut of your money.

If you have friends that have their own businesses it is always worth asking if they have anything work that you may be able to help them with. If they work in the construction industry or similar then you may be able to help labour for them or if it is more office based work then they may be able to find you some admin work that you could assist with.

Social media is a great place to post if you are looking for local work. You can put it on local community pages as well as sharing it with your friends and family. You may be surprised as to how many people have got work this way.

  • Help in searching for a job

Finding a job is not always easy and can seem like a never ending task. If you are in need of work quickly, then you will want to apply for as many job vacancies as possible to give yourself the best chance of landing employment. People that have been made redundant, had to leave a job due to relocation or have been off work for a while and need to return often need help in finding a vacancy that they are suited to. They may not have a very good CV or may not be familiar with the recruitment process, especially if they have never worked or have been in the same job for a long time.

With high competition for jobs you will need to ensure that your CV and covering letters are the best that they can be to compete against other candidates. Experience and qualifications are often the main reasons for an employer choosing a particular candidate but even if you are not as qualified as others, you can still land a job, it just mean that you may have to persuade the employer a little more.

You CV and cover letter is the first impression you will give the potential employer so it is vital that this is correct. Not only should you ensure that all the information is accurate but also that it is written and displayed in a way which is easily readable and gives all the necessary information.

  • Influx of job hunters come September

During the months leading up and during September, there is often a larger amount of people looking for employment. With many families having children that are about to start school in September, parents are often no longer needed at home so much and therefore often need to get a full or part time job. This is also a time when students are starting to look for jobs working up towards Christmas, so you may find that you are also competing against many of them too.

If you are looking to return to employment during September then I would strongly recommend start to look and apply as soon as you can. It may be that you need to start the job early, but if you might be able to get friends and family to help out for a few weeks or so, then at least you can secure a position before the rush starts.

Starting the job before September will also mean you have had chance to settle in prior to your children starting school and may make it easier should you have to have any time off in the first week or so when your child is settling in to classroom life.

  • Getting back into work after a career break

Many people at some point in their working life will take a career break, whether it’s to have children, to travel or just to have a bit of respite. Whatever the reason when you decide go get back into work it can seem pretty daunting and you can be left feeling a little lost at where to start.

Sometimes after a career break easing yourself in gently can be the best option, this may be through taking on a bit of volunteer work or casual work that could then increase and lead to part time hours. This means that it won’t be such a shock to the system as taking up a nine till five job five days a week.

It’s also a good opportunity to really think about what you’d like to do career-wise and if it’s time to make a career change then after a break is a great chance to give something new a try.

Sometimes if looking for work seems a bit daunting then the best place to start is a recruitment agent as they can help you to find a suitable role for you based on your skill set and past experience. They will also be able to give you help with your CV and advice with regards interview techniques and application form completing.
