  • Utilising LinkedIn to boost your career prospects

    Whatever your profession it’s really worth creating a LinkedIn profile to allow you to always have a professional representation of yourself available for possible recruitment head hunters or potential employers to view and contact you.

    There are many options when you start a profile, some of which you can set up for free some that you have to pay for, but if you are looking for a new job then spending that bit extra could really help you here.

    As part of the profile you can upload a picture of yourself, this is a good idea as it makes it easier for people who know you to find you and it also can give an impression of what sort of person you are in a professional situation.
    The photo should always be a smart professional looking one and NEVER a selfie or group shot from a night out! This would not show a professional manner and could put potential employers off.

    The content that you choose for your profile should be fairly short and to the point avoiding rambling and information that’s not necessary.

    Lastly, it’s important to proof read all the content on your profile as if you were sending off an application as spelling and grammatical errors could give a negative impression.

  • Finding part time work

    There are many cases where part time work may be the most suitable form of employment, for example if you are looking to supplement a student loan, if you have young children so can only work during school hours or if you are semi-retired and just want a little job to get you out of the house a couple of days a week. What ever the reason there is plenty of positions that suit this style of work, particularly shift work within factories, shops or in bars or restaurants.

    The beauty of shift work is that if needs be you can usually swap shifts around if you need time off meaning you wouldn’t miss out on pay. The hours can be quite flexible so if you are only able to do evening work or work at times when you have child care available that’s usually a feasible option.

    It’s also a good way of being able to have more than one job and work the shifts around each other so that you are not doing the same tasks day in and day out.

    Part time work doesn’t always pay very well so it’s important to look around to get a fair wage for the job that you are doing.

  • Keeping your CV up to date

    Whether you are in the process of looking for a new job or happy in your current one it is advised to try and keep your CV as up to date as possible. You never know when you may see a job that you want to apply for even if you are not looking and if the closing date is very soon, the last thing you want is for your CV to be years out of date and miss the closing date whilst you up date it.

    If you have taken a training course at work or have learnt to undertake new tasks and responsibilities then add it to your CV when it is fresh in your mind as it will make it a lot easier to tweak when you come to send it out to potential employers.

    It is not normally worth updating a cover letter as this really needs to be personalised specifically to the job you are applying for.

  • Registering your CV with a recruitment agency

    When looking for a new job, there are hundreds of recruitment agencies that you can register your CV with to aid you in your search. These agencies often do not charge you to register with them and will upload your profile and CV to their system. Some will scour the internet for jobs that potentially match your skill set and requirements and either sent your CV to the employer or contact you to discuss the job. If they have any employer advertise a job specifically with them, they will also recommend you for it.

    Once your CV has been sent to a company, the agency with liaise with them to see if they would be happy for you to attend an interview. If the employers likes your CV and thinks you may be suitable they will then ask the agency to contact you and arrange an interview. This process can save you a lot of time and get your CV out to hundreds of employers that may not have seen it otherwise.

  • Are you more qualified than you think?

    If you’ve been looking for a new job for quite some time and you have been finding limited opportunities, then may want to branch your search out a bit more. You should look into jobs that seem ‘out of your reach’ because there have been many surprises for job seekers who try their luck.

    It’s important to stay active and if you’ve got the confidence to back up your qualifications then there is no reason why you can’t apply for senior positions, even if you’re just starting out. The worst thing that can happen is that a company says no, or ignores your application altogether, but there may be circumstances where they do look at your CV and consider you for a leading position.
